My wife and I watch The Waltons every night as we eat dinner. We are going to Waltons Mountain Museum for the first time this May. I have a question about the episode The Fire. After the fire that was started by the drunken man Ludy Miss Hunter was able to make a school room in Ike Godsey's Pool Room for the older kids. She mentioned that the younger school kids were already taken care of with a place to learn. My question is who taught the younger kids since Miss Hunter was with the older ones? Not really a big deal but just something that I was thinking about. Thanks.

Hi Rich, I've wondered the same thing. It seems that all the children, from elementary through high school, were in the same room and taught by Miss Hunter most of the time, but in this particular episode, the high school students were taught separately. I have a couple of theories. 1. Maybe when the school burned down, Miss Hunter couldn't find a place that would accommodate all of her students, so she placed the younger students in whatever place was available, and found someone to teach them. It could have just been someone from the community. It didn't have to necessarily be a licensed teacher. After all, it was just a temporary solution. That way she could spend her time teaching the high school students. 2. Maybe it was another one of those inconsistencies that we weren't supposed to notice.

I believe school was almost over for that year and it would have been easier to find someone to teach the early grades than the high school. It would be more important to get those graduating high school ready than the younger kids.

Great answers both of them. I also would like to go with Brenda's first suggestion. I love that show and in an another hour and a half I will be sitting down to dinner with my wife and watching The Waltons.

The classrooms are on the outside walls of the building and all open into the large "cafegymatorium" which is an interesting building design. I have never seen a school designed like that.
