In The Ceremony Ben was the one who kept asking what is a Jew and in The Beginning he was the one who had a problem with Jason marrying Toni because she is Jewish. Do you think they chose Ben's character to do these things because Eric Scott is Jewish? I wonder how he felt about it.

This would be a good question to ask Eric Scott, for those who are going to the homecoming this weekend.

I didn't know he was Jewish! In one of Earl Hamner's books there is a funny part where everyone is trying to describe what a Jew or Catholic is (I can't remember which). Some thought they were Amish or something else that was far off base.

Yes, someone please do ask Eric the question and make note of the answer as I'm sure many have wondered about it. Some Jewish girl told of being asked if they still sacrificed animals, as the only Jews her friend knew of were those from the Bible! To tell the truth I am not knowledgeable enough of Jewish custom to know if they simply dropped animal sacrifice or substituted something else in its place, or if some still practice it.

Jewish people do not sacrifice animals anymore. They haven't done that for a very long time.

That's kind of what I figured as I hadn't seen the custom in books or other sources about Jews.

Hey all- I think someone asked me about this at the convention this weekend. I do think that it was a wink wink that my character would ask "What is a Jew?" months after I had a Bar Mitzvah. I did think that Ben was very judgmental later on about Jason marrying a Jew, I took it that I would embrace my inner-grandma, I really never felt that it was consistent with my character of Ben. I hope that helps answer the question.
As far as sacrifices, there is none done in current Judaism, however, there are symbols, like the Pesah-sacrificial lamb bone that is on the seder plate at Passover.
Take care,
Eric Scott

Eric - It was my husband (Mr. Forever) and I who asked you about the two different Walton's episodes pertaining to Judaism. Glad you decided to 'pop' in and answer it better than I probably could have. I definitely didn't want to quote you out of context.
You are always so wonderful with your fans and we all appreciate it. We really enjoyed spending this past weekend with you.

Thank you for popping in and answering the question, Eric. I also thought Ben's reaction to Jason marrying a Jewish woman was out of character for Ben, and I wonder why it was written that way. The other family members seemed to be uncomfortable with it, as many people are when presented with a situation that they are not accustomed to. But Ben was downright hostile toward Jason. I think the person who asked you the question last weekend was our own forum member, ForeverWaltons.

Apparently ForeverWaltons was posting while I was composing my post. I was almost right. It was Mr. Foreverwaltons.

Thanks for answering Eric and thanks to Mr.Forever for passing my question on to you. I agree that it was out of character for Ben or any of the Waltons for that matter to be so judgemental about Jason marrying a Jewish woman. The Waltons were always so accepting of people from different backgrounds, Verdie and her family, the carnival people, the gypsies and they even had a Bar Mitzvah in their home. For one of them to treat Toni like that just didn't make sense to me.
Now had Cora Beth been the one to be so judgemental to Toni that would have made perfect sense.

Slightly off topic.
In Stephen King's wonderful novel "IT," Richie (trashmouth) introduces his Jewish friend Stan to his other friends.
He says "Stan's a Jew. He killed Christ."
To which Stan replied, "I think that must've been my dad."
