Haven't seen any huckleberries, but if you want to see dewberries, come by our country place in southern Mississippi. In May the place is full of them! I wish I could concentrate them in one spot but they spread mainly in areas where we don't want them to and a lot of them get mowed down. They sure are delicious mixed in with cereal or just on their own.

We go huckleberry picking here every fall...being mountian country. Find them along old cutblocks.Last year was a good year. I have a great recipe for huckleberry pie if anyone wants it.

Huckleberries are common in our area but only on the Indian Reservation. They pick and sell them each year. I usually buy about 20 pounds and freeze them. I love them!

THANK YOU MS. SUSSIE, I DONT KNOW FOR SURE, BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT THEY WERE A WILD BLUEBERRY, BUT 100 TIMES BETTER. THERE ARE STILL SOME AR0UND UP IN THE MOUNTAINS; ON THE OLD SAW MILL-CUT ROADS. BUT WE DONT GET UP THAT FAR. . HAPPY NEW YEAR & BEST WISHS, JERRY Huckleberries taste like wine to me for some reason.

what huckleberries look like. They may be blue to purple in color. .
Zadok tells me, there are two genera of huckleberry in North America.. Gaylussacia mainly found in eastern North America, especially G baccata which have darker berries. These are most likely the kind Esther used in her pies. The other genus is Vaccinium which are found on the west coast and into British Columbia, for example Vaccinium parvifolium which are more purple in color.
Blueberries and cranberries are also in genus Vaccinium.
