I live in Sydney Australia and just got home from the supermarket and decided to watch some TV while I had some lunch. I flicked through the channels and nearly fell over when I saw A Waltons Thanksgiving Reunion was on! My main reason for being surprised is because its very rare for any Australian channels to show The Waltons. Needless to say, I do have the show on DVD but its always nice to think that the programmers chose to air the Waltons

It was on Channel 7TWO - it started at 1pm and finished about 3. You can probably watch it on catch up TV.

Hello, That's great that you were able to catch a Waltons program on the television in Australia.
Not being an expert on Australian history, did that country go through the Depression to the extent that it occurred in the United States and Europe?
Also, has Australian TV produced any programs comparable to the Waltons (i.e., a close knit poor family remaining strong in the face of bad times)? If so I'd like to know so that I could see if they would be available over here to view.
Thank you and all the best,
Elizabeth New Orleans USA

I am a Sydney girl living in Northern Ireland and remember watching The Waltons on Channel Ten in the 70's and into the early 80's. We get the Waltons on the True Movies Channel here every day and the series has been playing on a loop for three years now, I watch it on a daily basis. I never tire of the show. Why not write to Channel Ten and request they re-broadcast the series during the day or in the afternoon? never hurts to try

Elizabeth New Orleans USA [/quote] We got the Waltons on the TV in Australia during the 70's and up until the series ended so many Australians of my vintage know and remember the show with much fondness. The Depression hit Australia very hard and Australian society was going through very hard times before the Crash in '29 and the period lasted up until the onset of WW2 in 1939. In the early 20's Australia was feeling the effects of the large number of young men killed in WW1, a young country with a relatively small population at the time felt the death toll of it's country's youth very deeply. In the early 20's unemployment was at 10% and this doubled in the 30's, a policy of deflation drastically lowered wages which made things even worse. Many people became homeless, children left school at 12 and 13 so they could work, migrants were resented because they worked for next to nothing and were employed over Australian people. My mum calls them the 'bread and dripping days' because as a small child in the early 30's she recalls her mother feeding the family on bread spread with the meat drippings. We didn't have an Aussie version of The Waltons but we did have one called The Sullivans, about a Melbourne family pulling together during WW2. It focused more on the family circle than an entire community. It ran from 1976-1983 and was very popular. In fact, Sally Boyden, who played the little English girl in the Waltons episode The Children's Carol, also appeared in The Sullivans and other actors who also appeared in the show were Mel Gibson and Sam Neill

Thanks for the information!
Sad to hear that the Depression was so bad in Australia. Oh that was a bad time all over. My Dad's family wasn't affected too much, but my Mom's was hit very hard. My Grandpa finally was able to get a job with the government program WPA. The family had to rely on getting surplus food - my Mom said it might be butter, it might be a big basket of pears! As they lived in the city they had it harder than the Waltons, who could hunt, fish, and grow their food.
Unfortunately it looks like The Sullivans isn't presently available over here, although it is in other countries, including The Netherlands.
Christmas must also be different in Australia as it takes place in Summertime. No White Christmas there!
All the best, Elizabeth
