Jan, I am so sorry to hear about your husbands leg. Infection is not something to fool around with. It's too bad it happened at all, but the timing is bad too. I hope he makes a speedy recovery, and I am sorry to hear you'll be missing the reunion. I know you were really looking forward to it, especially after the cruise. I have a feeling that the next reunion, you and your hubby will be there! Take Care Jan

Jan, I'm so sorry that you have to miss the reunion. I was looking forward to meeting you in person, but I understand why you can't go. I hope your husband has a complete recovery very soon.

Oh dear Jan, I am so sorry to hear about your husband getting hurt. Of course we will miss meeting you and be thinking of you and your husband. Please know we are praying for a quick recovery for your husband. I think I will be posting a few things periodically throughout the day from my cellphone. If they have wifi available in the banquet room I will bring my iPad so I can post pictures and messages from the banquet.

Jan, I was so looking forward to meeting you and your hubby. Your husband's health comes first and I will keep you both in my prayers. May he have a speedy recovery and no lingering side effects from this. Hopefully Carolyn will have another reunion next year and we will all be able to attend it.

Jan, my heart is breaking for you. I can only imagine how disappointed you are. But I will be praying that your hubby makes a complete recovery soon. Everything happens for a reason and you are right to put your husband's health above all. We'll all be keeping you both in our thoughts and hoping to hear good news soon. Please keep us posted. Hugs to you.

This is a very difficult post to write. My husband injured his leg in a freakish yard accident with the metal culvert in our ditch on October 14. We initially thought it would be no problem to recover from, but his leg worsened from the wound earlier this week and we began to get a bit nervous about his recovery and traveling across the country. He further worsened last night and we spent four hours in the ER today. He now has a very serious infection in his leg that has to be monitored very closely for a while by doctors to make sure the infection doesn't spread any further. I am feeling so sad after all the planning and excitement of attending our very first Virginia reunion. I will miss terribly not being with you all, as I was looking forward to meeting so many of you from the forum. Have a wonderful time together, everyone, and know that I will be there with you in spirit. *I am hoping someone on Carolyn's waiting list might be able to use our banquet/hotel reservations, and am waiting to hear word back from her before I cancel out at the hotel. Freakish is the right word -- and, it's scary.... nothing to fool around with. I hope and assume that the docs will be able to soon rid his leg of the infection and all will be well. In the scheme of things, the reunion is the last thing you should think about !!
Take good care of yourselves and keep us posted.
Jeri

From what I remember they do have wifi available in the banquet room as last year Michael McGreevy and I were messaging with Ryan right from the dinner table really looking forward to seeing all the pictures, and Jan, I'm sorry that you're unable to attend this year praying and keeping everything crossed that the infection clears up and soon x

How worrying for you both! I certainly hope he will recover quickly.
I'm also very sorry not to be meeting up with you during this reunion, and how disappointing for you to miss the event.
As one who has missed many in the recent years, due to distance, I can tell you that forum members are very diligant about posting updates and photos from the reunion for those of us who can't be there.
Cheers, Karen

I have a feeling that the next reunion, you and your hubby will be there! Take Care Jan Daniella, I was thinking about your post a few hours ago as I was gathering up all my travel routing materials and state maps I had placed in a tote bag.... ready to hit the road on Tuesday morning. I was going to put everything away in their separate place today and got to thinking to myself.... why do I even want to take them out of the tote bag? Gosh darn, Daniella's feelings are right on..... we ARE going to be there next year! So, I am already set to go to Virginia next year....minus re-booking all those same motel/hotel rooms and packing my clothes. As long as Carolyn has a 2015 reunion, Jan and Roger will see you all next year. (Hubby isn't going anywhere near that ditch next year to pick up a stray corn stalk from the field behind us. Corn stalk + a slip on wet grass of hill + culvert = no trip to Virginia.)
That's the kind of positive attitude to have Jan. You have something wonderful to look forward to.

Hopefully all of us can meet up in 2015, wherever the reunion is. I have to tell you I went through something similar last year. We were gonna meet my daughter, SIL and grandkids in De Smet, for the Laura Ingalls site, hubby had gotten cellulitis in his leg (due to a freak accident) I didn't feel it was safe to drive the 7 hrs with his leg like that (being a nurse, I was thinking blood clot on the way there). So we had to cancel. Haven't been able to reschedule that trip yet, but hope to make it there next year. Keep us posted on your hubby. We will certainly be thinking of you!

Jan, I'm using your thread and troubles to mention something about my dad (sorry).... Dad was great at taking in stride things that got in the way regarding vacation plans in particular.... He kept us all calm when last-minute things came up to intrude on those plans.... found a way to make us laugh and "get on with life" !!! -- he was also good at helping us make it through bad weather in the midst of the vacation.... making up special indoor games, cramming more into the "good" days, etc.... He made it impossible for us to freak out -- not easy when dealing with a bunch of kids

The old saying, "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" is something that happens to all of us one time or another and we must make the best of it. I always try to remember that if I can. Sometimes it can be very difficult. Your dad was a very wise man, helping to keep you all calm and focused. It sounds like he taught you and your siblings a lot of very good life lessons. Thanks .... and it only took me 40-50 years to figure that out !!

What began as a "freakish" yard accident two weeks ago tomorrow has now progressed into leg surgery for my husband early this Wednesday morning. I can hardly wrap my mind around such a bizarre happening leading to surgery. My husband had a very difficult weekend with a trip to the ER on Saturday. His orthopedic surgeon took one look at his leg this morning and recommended getting him into surgery ASAP. The poor guy is in so much pain and can barely walk. He will hopefully be back on the road to recovery very soon. So, this trip to Virginia was certainly not meant to be this year. I (sniff, sniff ) cancelled our reservations at the Kirkley Hotel this afternoon. Now, I will anxiously look forward to all the wonderful reports from those of you who will be posting. My blessings go with you, my Walton friends. I know this will be the most wonderful reunion ever!
Surgery?! He must have done it up real good, sure hope it takes care of everything. I will be praying that the surgeon(s) hands are guided for the most good. Prayers are already going up for the both of you.

A couple of questions, Jan, and I hope I'm not being too personal... Where on his leg did this happen, and is it sort of a long slash ? He is not diabetic, is he ?
I'm sure he'll be okay, but it's looking like a long road.... all good wishes for both of you. I just KNOW he'll be recovering nicely for Thanksgiving

What a terrible and frightening thing to go through.
