It was supposed to be a "family of redheads" and in the first season, that was mostly true -- at least, certain heads were redder in the beginning.... it appears that the producers thought better of that initial idea and toned down much of the red hair going into season 2 (or perhaps even sooner), with the exception of Ben and Elizabeth, who were true redheads....
One thing I liked/preferred about "The Waltons" is the fact that it was not a serial (soap opera) -- each episode was a complete story within itself and could be viewed without full knowledge of any other episode.... and it is best not to view the episodes with any sense of strict timeline nor exacting continuity.... One can enjoy each episode for what it is, as well as the entire family history.
Wasn't Jason's hair true red also?

Wasn't Jason's hair true red also? You're right !! .... forgot about Jason, probably because his hair wasn't as vibrant a red as Ben and Elizabeth....

That perm was awful! Someone (a girl) was visiting the Waltons and she said she may even let Cora Beth do her hair. Olivia tells her just don't let her give you a perm. Was it Sarah Griffith visiting and courting with Sheriff Ep Bridges that said that?

Was it Sarah Griffith visiting and courting with Sheriff Ep Bridges that said that? Yes -- it was when Livy was "plotting" to get Sarah and Ep together by having a dinner at the house.... and Sarah remarked that she might have CB do her hair....

Oh that perm! the colour, the wiry curls....it just looked so uncomfortable to have on your head. The colour was awful! it reminded me of one of those steel scouring pads you use to scrub saucepans. The best part of that episode for me is always Verdie's reaction when Olivia takes her scarf off...I always wonder if during filming they kept Micheal's hair under a wrap and only revealed it when they began filming for a surprise element to get the right reaction from Verdie because Lynn Hamilton's face is such a mix of shock and amusement in that scene

All of the kids had red hair or a reddish tint to their hair in "The Homecoming" but that changed for the tv show.

I remember the perm my mom gave me when I was about ten. I have these awful school pictures to prove that perms and thick hair don't go together!

I remember when "home permanents" first came in -- late 40's ? -- and everyone wanted to try it !!.... my mom and both grandmothers did -- which unfortunately meant they continued it for years and years, I suppose because no one knew how to let it grow out and look decent while it was doing so !! ... and the first brand-name doll I remember was the Toni doll -- so named because you could give it a Toni Home Permanent although not too often because the glued-on wig didn't stay attached if the hair was wet a lot !! ... I still have my Toni doll (with new wig!)
And then there was the Afro look -- very popular even among white women.... My mom got herself an Afro when she was going through menopause -- it was the only "do" that didn't suffer from head sweats !!! ... couldn't believe she did that -- just not HER ... there she was, walking around with a "pick" in her handbag instead of a comb.....

LOL! I remember Jim Bob's pink hair! I think Olivia's hair had a reddish tint during the first season also, but it wasn't real obvious.
