I think at times we tend to over analyze the series...I think we should just try to get into the groove of the show and just enjoy!

Olivia's perm had all kinds of problems. When she was wired up to the perm machine, her hair was as brown as it could be. The permed color was just weird, sort of a silver brown color.
I just watched that episode a day or so ago, and wondered how she looked in the next one. I guess getting away to that hotel made all the difference. I sure didn't like the turban thing she was sporting at the end.
Haven't noticed JB with red hair.

It was supposed to be a "family of redheads" and in the first season, that was mostly true -- at least, certain heads were redder in the beginning.... it appears that the producers thought better of that initial idea and toned down much of the red hair going into season 2 (or perhaps even sooner), with the exception of Ben and Elizabeth, who were true redheads....
One thing I liked/preferred about "The Waltons" is the fact that it was not a serial (soap opera) -- each episode was a complete story within itself and could be viewed without full knowledge of any other episode.... and it is best not to view the episodes with any sense of strict timeline nor exacting continuity.... One can enjoy each episode for what it is, as well as the entire family history.

John Boy definitely had red hair in The Homecoming. It seems like it was back to brownish blond by the time they did Season 1. I guess he was willing to change it for what he thought would be a one-time thing, but when it became a series, he decided to go back to his natural color. Count me among those who was glad Olivia's hair grew out so fast. That perm was awful!

I just captured these 2 screen shots, and there isn't a lot of difference in his hair. The first one is from The Homecoming and the other one is from The Foundling. Attachments:

That perm had to be a wig, right ladies ? Unless THAT was her regular hair and she wore a wig in every other episode.

I figure Brenda is right.
He probably didn't want to dye his hair red every week for a tv show. Cant say that I blame him. although I did dye my hair red during my "Grunge" days

It was hard to tell.I have always thought that a hairpiece was used, for expedience sake.... it was a good choice for the "bun" of the times -- we have photos of my Mom with the same "do" .... I think we all preferred Livy's hair in the French twist -- but to me it seemed too formal for a rural mom....
Some time in the early 60's, Mom let her hair grow and attempted that bun again -- reminiscing?? .... but she couldn't get it right, couldn't remember how she had done it lo those many years ago !!

I didn't like Olivia hair in the first season,I liked it much better in the latter seasons, and I sure didn't like her perm, that wasn't an Olivia look.
