Ok -- I'm lost again.... (sorry)
If the musical contains songs like "My Father, Clay Spencer", it's obviously about the Spencer family.... yet, there's a song that Mary Ellen sings, and that's obviously the Walton family.....
So, is the musical in fact being produced in various venues as either/or ?

The play I saw was about the Spencer family. The book The Homecoming is also about the Spencer family. They became Waltons for TV purposes. The play is based on the book, but the story is the same as the story in the movie. The names were changed just as nedandres described.

I can't help but wonder if either you or Ned clicked on the website I mentioned above.... I understand that Ned saw something wherein Maryellen sang.... but what about the "Clay" song ??
All I'm saying is that it appears that the "musical" can be changed depending on what a producer wants....

I didn't see a website to click on. Sorry. Anyway, I did find this. See if the link works. The Homecoming

Here's another link. This is the musical, but I think it is the same play as in the above link. It just has the music added to it. The Homecoming MusicalThese are just previews, by the way, not the entire play.

The two links you provided are to the same publishing company as my link....
It appears that the musical was based on Spencers Mountain.... I have not found any musical based on Waltons Mountain, although a stage play may well exist....
So, I think we can assume that the performance Ned witnessed at the 1997 reunion was probably one of the songs taken from this musical -- especially since he has told us that Mary Ellen was swearing in it !! (sounds more like a Spencer to me.)
Phew.... and sorry if I drove you nuts over this.... I can be like a terrier with a bone

I'm not sure what you mean by it was "based on Spencer's Mountain." It was based on The Homecoming. The setting was Spencer's Mountain. Spencer's Mountain and Walton's Mountain are the same thing. The name was changed for tv purposes.

Yes, the musical's cast is the Spencer family just as the characters in the book, The Homecoming, are the Spencer family. The musical is based on the book, not the made-for-tv movie.

I think it would be fun to see the show, although I doubt that a production will be produced in the near future in Ecuador. HA!
It is confusing with the name change, but since the show is based on the book rather than the TV movie which served as a sort of pilot for the TV show, then the characters would be named Spencer.

It would be interesting to go see it.

The Nelson County players in Virginia put the play on every so often. Usually around the Christmas holidays: I will look for the link.
