Hi, I saw portions of the play at the first Waltons reunion I attended in Virginia, in October 1997, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the show. The composer of the musical play sang several selections from the show. It was pleasant enough but not really memorable, musically at least. Of course, the storyline is strong. That year Earl attended, along with Ronnie Claire, Judy, Mary, Kami, and Hal Williams, along with other members of the Hamner family, Marion and Audrey among them.

I saw "The Homecoming" a couple of years ago performed by the Kanawha Players, an amateur theater group in Charleston, WV. It was okay but not nearly as good as the TV movie. But they were amateurs after all, and I was glad I got to see it. It's not often that something I really want to see is performed in my area.
In December, there is going to be a Laura Ingalls play at the Paramount Theater in Ashland, Kentucky, which is just across the river from me. I'm looking forward to that.
(A little trivia: the Paramount in Ashland is where Billy Ray Cyrus filmed his Achy Breaky Heart video.)

I hadn't realized it was a musical. I thought it was a drama like the television movie.

I thought the musical "The Homecoming" is the Spencer's Mountain story....

Found this online... but I don't think the write-up is correct:

Bumping this up and really hoping Brenda (or anyone) can give us first-hand knowledge as to whether if the musical is based on The Waltons or Spencer's Mountain.... the website I attached above doesn't make sense to me.... hard to tell which is which !!

The portions I saw at the Walton reunion in 1997 were based on "The Homecoming". One song has Mary Ellen sweating in it.

Thanks, Ned
I was thinking that the website I captioned above was probably incorrect.... but am also wondering if the script/songs could have been used in two ways -- in musicals for both The Waltons and for Spencers Mtn -- by just changing some of the lyrics and lines.... I love that they have songs like "Applesauce Cake" -- the problem is that there are also songs called "My Father, Clay Spencer" and "Pool Hall Blues" ......
It appears that scripts and music are mostly used by high schools and small regional theatres.... they may well have two versions available.... I'm still trying to find more info online,

The play I saw in Charleston a few years ago was based on the book, The Homecoming. The children in the book had the same names that they had in Spencer's Mountain. The girls were Becky, Shirley, and Pattie-Cake. The boys were Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Clay Boy. I remember either reading or hearing Earl Hamner mention once that he wrote The Homecoming as a prequel to Spencer's Mountain. In other words, the events in The Homecoming took place before the events of Spencer's Mountain, even though Spencer's Mountain was written first. And yes, it was a musical.

Got it !
Thanks !!

The play The Homecoming is the Christmas story based on the book The Homecoming A Christmas Story. The characters' names are the same as they are in Spencer's Mountain, but it's not based on the book Spencer's Mountain. It is the same story told in the TV movie, The Homecoming. Earl Hamner couldn't use the original names in the TV movie. It had something to do with Warner Bros having the rights to those names because of the movie Spencer's Mountain. That's how they became Waltons instead of Spencers.

Brenda is absolutely right. For "The Homecoming" and then "The Waltons" the names from the novel could not be used with the exception of Olivia due to contractual issues. Patricia Neal, Olivia in "The Homecoming," claimed that she asked Earl to make Warner Brothers look the other way because her daughter who had passed away had that name, and Patricia wanted to honor her memory by having that name in the TV movie. The xecutives at Warners decided not to make a fuss about that one name's being used.
In my post above I mean to say that Mary Ellen swore in one of her songs, not sweated. Sorry.
