Here is a video tribute to Grandma Walton (Ellen Corby), that was posted on Youtube back in September (2013). I just came across it, it's pretty good:

I'm sorry I never had a chance to meet her. I would have loved that. On one of the INSP Moments, Earl Hamner talked about how his original "Grandma" character he conceived was much like his own Grandma--much gentler and more loving. As Michael Learned said in another interview, Earl was rather protective over these characters because they were based on his real family--most of whom were still alive and watching the show each week. After the first few episodes, he approached Ellen and gently asked her if she could perhaps sweeten up the Grandma role a little. He said she replied, "You have so many sweet characters on this show you're going to give your audience sugar diabetes!" ha! So she continued to offer the vinegar and pepper. Earl Hamner said, "Of course, she was right."
And I agree, Earl. I can't imagine The Waltons without that firecracker of a grandma--Ellen Corby. Dear Ellen, wherever you are...I hope you're resting in peace. And I do hope that every now and then you pick up a broom and swat Will Geer on the backside. Just because.... xoxoxoxo
