As my son's birthday draws near and I finish up last minute things for his surprise birthday party (nothing extravagant) I find myself wondering what it must have been like growing up during the Great Depression. I don't recall seeing any shows where there were any birthday parties. I could be wrong of course, just none come to mind as of this moment Just curious what a birthday would look like for one of the Walton children. Would it be a surprise celebration? Would Mama make one of her delicious homemade cakes? Would they have that child's favorite meal? What do yall think?! Please share

Would Mama make one of her delicious homemade cakes? Would they have that child's favorite meal? What do yall think?! Please share Let’s see: Livvy and Grandma would bake a cake. (Oh just brilliant Frank, no one would have thought of that.) Grandpa & Jim-Bob will build something together. Jason will play a musical piece that eventually gets eaten by reckless and he’ll make up funny lyrics to the “Happy Birthday” song instead. Ben would buy something at Ike’s and it would get chewed up by reckless and eventually he and John Boy and Erin would get together and buy something else at Ike’s. Mary-Ellen would be complaining about something and brood around. Elizabeth and Grandma collaborate to write a card with Bible verses in it. Everyone would eat cake (except for reckless who is too full from eating and chewing everything else.) Yes, the child's favorite meal too. (Hey Frank...did you notice you listed ALL the children's names? Who's birthday would it be then, Frank???. Next time THINK before you post. Go back to the kids table with Scarlett and Daniela and throw more mashed potatoes around)

Yes, I think a favorite meal if possible and most definitely a cake. Maybe even making ice cream on the porch after dinner. I think perhaps Livvy and John would have gotten a small toy at Ike's if it where possible (or something more practical like new shoes). Or perhaps Livvy would have sewn a new shirt or pair of pants. If it were winter, Grandma might have knitted a sweater. But with 7 kids, it would have required her to be knitting all the time. Maybe the girls would have gotten together and baked a batch of the birthday kid's favorite cookies.

My daughter tells me she recalls an episode where Grandma returns from a dr visit in Charlottesville and she believes it was Grandma's birthday cause she was given gifts upon her arrival. Anyone else rememeber this?

Anyone else rememeber this? Season 2, The Awakening. Grandma faints right outside the porch, I think she had an inner ear problem. Is this the episode where Erin knits something for Grandma's birthday and no one could figure out what it was. I think John Boy buys flowers from Ike and gives them to Mary Ellen and then Mary Ellen gives it to Grandma. That is a very touching scene when John Boy gives flowers to his sister. Gee, I hope I am thinking of the right episode here

Didn't Elizabeth have a sleepover with some friends to celebrate her 13th birthday in that crazy Poltergeist episode?

You are correct on your remembrances Frank. I loved how no one knew what it was that Erin had knitted, but they were still trying to be sweet about it. LOL!

Oh yes now you've refreshed my memory! I do remember that episode now especially when John Boy gives the flowers to Mary Ellen and Erin's special gift For some reason I just didn't recall that it was Grandma's birthday! Not sure about the other episode with Elizabeth. I always skip that episode. Stuff like that just creeps me out!

The episode where Grandpa had his heart attack was near his birthday. Grandma was going to take him to a lecture at the college about Tahiti. But they showed him the slide show in his tent when he was recovering. The only other birthday I can recall besides this one and the ones already mentioned is this. Jason had a birthday while in the army during the war. His sisters sent him a cake and the Baldwins sent him some recipe. I don't recall the episode, it would have been season 9.

It's such a beautiful...thing!" Grandpa: "What is it?" Grandma: "Why Zeb, everyone knows what this is. It's a...a...I know what it is, but I'm not going to tell." Grandma was especially sweet about it.

There was the one when Olivia's Uncle can for a visit as he had been laid off from the bank. It was his 64 birthday and they made him a cake. Olivia said something to the effect that "everyone here gets a cake for their birthday..." apologizing about the lack of candles do to do many birthdays....something like that
