Ok so I was driving this me to mom's and listening to my Homecoming music and got to thinking again...What is it that makes me such a Walton's fan? I decided it was the sense of family and purpose. I truly believe we have become a society that has too much free time and I think lack a sense of purpose. I know they refer to a "simpler time" but that isn't true. Just day to day living was busy! If you cooked on a woodstove, it had to be banked at night and feed all day. Nothing was just picked up at the store...you made it yourself. If you had a cow it had to be milked twice a day...seven days a week. Eggs to be collected and chicks to be raised. If you wanted chicken for supper the bird had to be killed the night before or in the early morning, plucked, etc. You preserved everything for winter. Bread made from scratch. If you wanted ice cream you had to prepare your mixture first then churn it. Same with butter. Washing was an all day affair. This I can attest to. I have an old washer from the 30's and decided to do it the "old" way. It is electric but I have to fill it and drain it manually. First I have to heat the water in a big double boiler, then bucket it into the tub. I let the clothes wash for 20 mins. then drain the tub. Fill it again for rinsing, drain and then run the clothes through the rollers before hanging them up to dry. Two loads seems to ake for ever! Of course no such thing as permanent press so ironing was also a big deal. If you had an electric iron...wow! My kids don't even own an iron. Socks were not picked up at Walmart and needed to be darned. Clothes were mended and fabric dyed. Essentially you were too busy to be bored and when you did get free time you really enjoyed and appreciated it. Now many of us get home from work after stopping to pick up fast food and plunk ourselves in front of the TV. I am not saying that I want to completely return to living in that time BUT you sure had a sense of purpose and when the day was done you were tired from hard work and the family worked together to make the load lighter.
Okay...I will get off my soap box now and get to my house work...did I mention there were no electric vacuums...lol

What makes me a Waltons fan? Well...I come from a very dysfunctional family. Though my father and I were very much alike, that is about where it stopped with anyone else in the family. However once a week we all agreed on something. The Waltons. For me it bring back memories of us all sitting in the living room together watching a show that we all enjoyed. I took allot of the Walton family values to heart. And, though I knew that my family would never be like that, I made an effort to be allot like the Waltons when I got out on my own. And I have to a degree.

I'm a Walton's fan because:
1) They were a close family, a loving and caring family ... and mine was dysfunctional...so I wanted to jump through the TV screen and be adopted by John and Olivia. 2) I loved meal time at the Walton's table. They could have discussed ice cube melting and I'd still watch! 3) I love McChance burgers 4) Ok ... Disregard #3 5) I loved it when the family went in the bus and on tours with Reuben Kincaid.. 6) I got mixed up... Forget #5 coz Greg went solo as Johnny Bravo coz he fit the suit 7) I'm really getting mixed up now . I like the episode where Rev Matthew Fordwick went to visit Janet & Crissy at the Ropers house 8) I must be sleepy and don't know what I am posting anymore ... Goodnight John-Boy

Part of the appeal for me is the slower pace. Because John-Boy is an inquisitive writer there is also a lot of contemplation depicted on the show. Most of the time the characters do a lot of walking; to the store, from school etc. and their day is filled with activities like cutting lumber or preparing food, you don't see that too often in modern dramas. Also I love the music as performed by the characters, I became familiar with many standards as a result of the show.

Most television shows have people treating each other poorly. Not many good role models showing kind mothers and fathers.

Maybe it is the area. It is still slow and quiet in Schuyler. It is amazing how many people find the town and the house. Definitely off the beaten path.

Weirdly, you have reminded of one of the things I liked about all of my time spent in Manhattan -- all the walking!! .... I was in much better shape when I spent so much time in the city

Absolutely! Lots of walking is the secret. People in Toronto and New York at least have that working for them. I have to force myself to walk and leave the car behind and I NEED to do a LOT more of it.

When I was younger, I loved any show that had a rural setting. There I was, growing up in the city wishing with all my might I lived on a farm. I know The Waltons didn't really have a "farm" in the classic sense, but to a girl living in an apartment in the Bronx...it was a farm. And for an hour every week, I got to "be on the farm" with them.
As I grew older, I loved it (and continue to love it) because of the values it promotes and because it brings back happy memories of my childhood (which was pretty happy even though I lived in the wrong place!). Now I also like it because I love watching all the old ways--the canning and milking and gathering eggs and the quilting. All the things I'm going to do in my semi-retirement when I have more time.

Each time I watch this show I just have this settled feeling inside, a warm feeling of security and continuity that comes from the sense of familiarity with all the characters and the storylines. They are the one unchanging thread through life and I know that I can always rely on an hour with the Waltons to remind me that the simple pleasures in life are always the best. It's just a very comforting feeling and to get that from a TV show is quite unique and special .

I wrote in Earl Hamner's birthday book that The Waltons is a "soothing balm to the soul" in this challenging world in which we live. It truly is.

The old family value ways in simpler times. I love how they sit down to a home cooked meal and conversation after a hard days work and school,. And then a few hours later they go to bed and say Goodnight! DaDaDa for the three chimes at the end of the show . The Waltons just make me and many of you relax and feel good for an hour or so.

I am always amazes that there are still so many Walton fans. When we were in Schuyler last week, we walked to Ike's store (it is about a block behind the Hamner house). While we were there, two big men on motorcycles pulled up, got off their bikes, took pictures in front of the store, and then drove off. The store is really small. About the size of a convenience store. We bought chips, sodas, and cookies. They even sold Tastecakes which is a packaged cake sold around the Philadelphia area. We were surprised to see them being sold there.
