I have such a collection of good stuff from DVDs that I purchased or those I made myself -- movies, TV series from the 1950s on, classics -- that I wouldn't be distressed if the TV writers went on strike for a year, or five, or ten. There just isn't much from the past few years that I'd go out of my way to preserve.

Out of the 20 shows listed, I watched 9: My So Called Life Frasier Chappelle's Show Louie The Sopranos Breaking Bad The West Wing Battlestar Galactica 30 Rock ER, St. Elsewhere and The Wonder Years were also great shows (gotta love anything with George Clooney) Breaking Bad was awesome. Anyone who ever saw Brian Cranston in Malcolm in the Middle, he was good in that show, but it didn't do him justice. He is such a great actor. The same for James Gandolfini--awesome in The Sopranos. Louie C.K and Dave Chappelle are hilarious. My So Called Life had Claire Danes and Jared Leto; great combo and the storylines were great. I'm a big TV watcher but the last few years with the influx of reality shows, it's gotten pretty bad. But I do like The Incredible Dr. Pol (vet) and Alaska: The Last Frontier with Jewel's family, the Kilchner's. I'm still an avid Amazing Race, Survivor and Big Brother fan. I've never missed a single episode of these three shows. All these cable channels and still nothing to watch LOL! But at least there's channels like INSP and Hallmark that airs family shows. Do you remember where there was only CBS, NBC, ABC and PBS? Boy, the pickins' were really slim back then! Believe me, I suffered through many episodes of Lawrence Welk and Hee Haw! Frasier was OK...most of the rest on your list I tried to watch...but didn't interest me. I guess I feel as Patricianne does. The Wonder Years I loved tremendously. Great show, esp when Kevin was little. I liked the Wonder Years. I liked Family Ties and I loved MASH when it was on. It's funny, though, that while I loved all those shows when they were on originally, I have no desire to watch them now. I also liked Cheers. I will still watch a Cheers episode every now and then if I come across it.

I don't know if this is a network that is available on any of your cable plans. It's called M E T V. It stands for Memorable Entertainment Television. They show nothing but the old shows. I guess you would call it a nostalgia channel. They have a lot of the old sitcoms, westerns, cop shows. They even have the original Star Trek.
I don't think this is anywhere close to the second golden age of TV. There are too many reality shows.

We get ME TV and so does David Harper (Jim Bob) as he and I were talking about watching it (10/19/2013 at The Kirkley Hotel in Virginia). He was telling me how just the other night he had watched an old show on ME TV that had Josephine Hutchison in it. She was the one that played Miss Mamie Baldwin in the Walton's movie - The Homecoming: A Christmas Story.
My kids love watching "Gilligan's Island" on it and my 9 year old thinks that he's Lucas McCain (Chuck Connors) as he is addicted to "The Rifleman."
It has wonderful shows that have a lot of our Walton's family, their neighbors and guest stars on them. Thriller, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, The Twilight Zone (of which our dear Earl Hamner wrote several episodes), Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Big Valley, Beverly Hillbillies, Ironside, Perry Mason, Daniel Boone, Dragnet, Adam-12, Emergency!, My Three Sons, etc.

I think dramatic television for adults is great these days, infact they beat the movies in their writing, a great lot of them. But sitcom television is absolutely awful. I do watch the big bang theory but that's it. I can't stand reality shows, they are full of morons, and it's scripted. Goodness I sound grumpy.
I love Me TV, Attenna TV, all those over the air stations that show old television shows. I'm seeing a lot of shows I've heard of before but never seen and really coming around to enjoy them.
There is a real lack of tv that the whole family can sit down to watch that does not talk down to children, isn't too cutesy that it makes adults want to be sick, and has great writers.

"Modern family "IS pretty good, I had never seen in until it went to syndication, but it's funny. I watch Big Bang too. I do watch that new "Dallas" and I couldn't believe what they showed on the finale. I have never seen "Game of Thrones" but from what I hear, you cant get attached to an individual character cause they kill them off out of nowhere. The only reality show I watch is "Hell's Kitchen" That one is pretty wild.

It may well be a new golden age -- For today's tv, all one has to do is avoid what is offensive.... there are literally hundreds and hundreds of good shows, but it does take time finding them.... The advent of cable and its growth has provided so much more excellent programming than we ever had before, and it grows every day. But, it's as difficult as it is to keep up with as the latest technology -- cell phones, iPads, tablets and such. But, finding the good programming is well worth it ... Hiding one's head in the sand isn't the greatest way to go -- the good stuff gets missed.
What is considered "family shows" today? -- many, many of the nature programs, documentaries, in-depth interviews, and the like are excellent for family viewing (and educational, to boot), as well as are many of "imported" shows from the U.K., Canada, Australia, etc. And all the movies available -- In the 50's and 60's, we got many one during the daytime, and evening movies perhaps only 3-4 times a week!!! The 70's brought more movies, particularly on cable, and eventually some interesting cable-made series programming, as well as all the wonderful old shows now aired all over the place!! For anyone who gave up on cable (or satellite), maybe it's time to take a new look at what is now available.
Yes, I say we're in Awesome's "Second Golden Age."

The only reality show I watch is "Hell's Kitchen" That one is pretty wild. I read the first "game of thrones" book before I decided on watching the series, because hbo's season sets are dreadfully expensive. I got hooked pretty quickly by the strong female characters in the books. Yes, there is a lot of things that might push the boundries and it might offend people who object to the language, sex scenes and what not. I would warn people before they watch the show to read a chapter or two of book one first because what you read in the books is exactly what you get on the television show. I really believe an adaptation of the books could never be made into a movie series because it is that racy. No, you cannot get too attatched to any character in the book series, because yes, they're probably going to die.
