Thank you for posting this, Forever! Such a fitting way to remember such a wonderful man. I saw a pic of his precious daughter, Sharon. Such a heartbreak that beautiful little girl never grew up. What a reunion they must have had. :::sniffle:::

Amazing...she looked just like him!
I have often wondered if her death led to his drinking. This thought came to mind when I learned that "The Waltons" got him to dry up. I realize he stated that the show got him to thinking that he needed to live for others rather than for himself. But often I wonder if it was working with the children in the show helped ease the pain of losing Sharon. Gave him something to live for, so to speak.

I believe losing his daughter had everything to do with his drinking. And probably the end of his marriage, too. People can only take so much pain at once and sometimes when it gets to be too much, they try to medicate it away.

"People can only take so much pain at once and sometimes when it gets to be too much, they try to medicate it away" I agree with you on that. People do not seem to understand that drinking does not make the problem go away. It just prolongs it and collects bigger problems along the way.

I believe that playing any of those parts on the Waltons for such a long period of time would have to fundamentally change your own character for the better. Simply watching the show makes me want to be a better person, makes me appreciate more the blessings in my life, and gives me a stronger sense of wonder in our ability to overcome and love.

Ralph was always gracious to his fans. I had the chance to meet him on two occasions, and he was kind to all.

It is very very rare that an actor can profoundly touch people's lives. Ralph Waite's acting in the Waltons touched me in very real and important ways. I cannot say enough for the humanity he brought to the character of John Walton. His acting was as good as any television acting has ever been. I miss him deeply and will always love him for his contributions to the arts.
