In that case, I'm sticking with the earlier episode (following my normal "rules"!) .... and making it June 13, 1924 -- which fits much better with the storyline and timeframe....

So this just illustrates the old saying "age is only a state of mind". Whatever was in the writers' minds at the time was the age of the characters in that particular episode.

The problem in the later seasons is that between s5 ep20 (where John Boy covers the Hindenburg disaster of May 1937) and and the final episode 4 years later, (set in June 1946) 9 years go by in the historical timeline. But of course the actors playing the kids only aged 4 years, so their ages had to be 'adjusted' as the series progressed. So e.g. Elizabeth is 10 in 1936, 13 in 1941, and 14 in 1944. Erin graduates from High School in 1937 but is still 18 in 1939. Jim Bob's date of birth is given as Jan 1923, or June 1924, but he is too young to enlist in 1942, and graduates from High School in 1944.

The age changes become really obvious in the later seasons. I watch the season sets once or twice a year in order. Maybe the most obvious change that bothers me is when Ben says he's the next to graduate from high school and instead Erin graduates next!

Since Ben and Erin were close in age, maybe he was going to graduate early with Erin... then he became too involved in proving himself a successful sales/businessman to also graduate by then. Ben seemed to always have a chip on his shoulder/something to prove.(My attempt at explaining an obvious loophole.)

He was an infant in The Children's Carol which took place in 1940. The following season's Christmas episode was Day Of Infamy which as we know was 1941 and JC was about a year and a half old. In 1945 the poor boy is still 2 years old.

I can't believe I still take time thinking about the ages of the children !! It occurred to me just today that one consideration might be the order in the cast listing...

I was looking them up and these are supposed to be there ages but who knows what year they are in except the beginning anyways John-Boy was 15 in the pilot, 17 in season 1, 18 in season 2, 19 in season 3, 20 in season 4, 21 in season 5, 22 in season 6, 23 in season 7, 24 in season 8 and 25 in season 9. Jason is 13 in the pilot, 15 in season 1, 16 in season 2, 17 in season 3, 18 in season 4, 19 in season 5, 20 in season 6, 21 in season 7, 22 in season 8 and 23 in season 9. Mary Ellen is probably a year younger then him so that would make her 12 in the pilot, 14 in season 1, 15 in season 2, 16 in season 3, 17 in season 4, 18 in season 5, 19 in season 6, 20 in season 7, 21 in season 8 and 22 in season 9. Ben is the next oldest probably 11 in the pilot, 13 in season 1, 14 in season 2, 15 in season 3, 16 in season 4, 17 in season 5, 18 in season 6, 19 in season 7, 20 in season 8 and 21 in season 9. Erin would probably be 10 in the pilot, 12 in season 1, 14 in season 1, 15 in season 2, 16 in season 3, 17 in season 4, 18 in season 5, 19 in season 6, 20 in season 7, 21 in season 8 and 22 in season 9. Jim-Bob would have then been 9 in the pilot, 11 in season 1, 12 in season 2, 13 in season 3, 14 in season 4, 15 in season 5, 16 in season 6, 17 in season 7, 18 in season 8 and 19 in season 9. Elizabeth would have been 4 in the pilot, 6 in season 1, 7 in season 2, 8 in season 3, 9 in season 4, 10 in season 5, 11 in season 6, 12 in season 7, 13 in season 8 and either 14 or 15 in season 9. Olivia was 35 in season 1, 36 in season 2, 37 in season 3, 38 in season 4, 39 in season 5, 40 in season 6. I am not so sure about the the grandparents or parents ages though.

You're right about that. Today I watched an episode where it was John Walton's high school reunion---25 years---and he was supposed to have graduated in 1911. In another episode, John couldn't get a government contract because he had NOT graduated high school because he went off to serve in World War 1, which began in 1914, before the graduation ceremony. The United States didn't enter WWI until April 1917.
