Wikipedia says he died of respiratory failure, which is different from a respiratory illness. Anything can cause respiratory failure. It basically means you stopped breathing.

Over last weekend, I watched a tv tribute to Woody Guthrie, which I'd seen several times before -- mainly to remind myself of any Will Geer coverage related to Woody.... hadn't remembered that Will actually sang THREE times in that documentary !!

Wikipedia says he died of respiratory failure, which is different from a respiratory illness. Anything can cause respiratory failure. It basically means you stopped breathing. This is from Wikipedia itself. Wikipedia is not a reliable source. Wikipedia can be edited by anyone at any time. This means that any information it contains at any particular time could be vandalism, a work in progress, or just plain wrong. Biographies of living persons, subjects that happen to be in the news, and politically or culturally contentious topics are especially vulnerable to these issues. Edits on Wikipedia that are in error may eventually be fixed. However, because Wikipedia is a volunteer run project, it cannot monitor every contribution all of the time. There are many errors that remain unnoticed for days, weeks, months, or even years. Therefore, Wikipedia should not be considered a definitive source in and of itself. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_is_not_a_reliable_source

As a young child I was captivated by Will Geer and The Grandpa character he portrayed. He was a wise old sage..a gentle, kind soul with the loyalty and devotion of man's best friend, the spirit of someone half his age, a taste for the recipe, and a slight penchant for shenanigans..
40 years later he still captivates me.

Will Geer was a folksinger, as well as an actor. Why didn't he do some music with Jon Walmsley, (Jason) on the show? The most I ever heard from him was a little bit of "Annabelle Lee," in the episode, "The Statue."

Today April 22, 1978 we lost an icon in Will Geer. He brought so much to the show of the Waltons. He had so much spirit inside of him. The love of nature and I truly believe the rest of the cast learned so much from him. Not only acting wise, but things about life. Will Geer also left us all with a beautiful theater called the Theatricum Botanicum. Will had a great comedic presence, but could also deliver a very dramatic performance as well. A great example of that is when Esther had to have surgery and he broke down to Olivia. He also had a great connection with all of the cast in the show , especially Ellen Corby.

To me, Will Geer was a staple to the Waltons. The cast looked up to him and his charismatic personality. It was not only the young cast members, but those cast members who were adults you admired him so well. He and Ellen Corby had a relationship on and off the screen that was pure magic. He also saved Ellen's life when she had her Stroke and not common to Ellen did not show up to work. Many say when Richard Thomas left the show the Waltons were never the same and that may be true, but when Will Geer passed away the light of the Waltons left the show.
