I a with Awe on this one. The woman had "baby rabies" and not much else. Actually, that is the one good thing. Ya knew by her having all those kids that she performed her bedroom duties.

I liked the role, and thought Michael Learned did a decent job with it.... I suppose it was fairly appropriate for the 1930's, but don't think it would fly these days -- the narrow-mindedness, rigidity, sometimes harsh sanctimony, etc.... Glad that Earl Hamner softened her up over the run of the series.... She definitely needed the balance of John and Zeb.... Have often wondered how Learned truly felt about the character, but doubt if we'll ever know -- ya cant' believe much actors say when their livelihood or past success is involved

Could she have liked the character that much is she asked to leave the show? Didn't she resent doing nothing but having babies and pouring coffee in the role?

A one hour a week show with 11 main characters and peripherals in and out every week. How in depth was any character, really? It was an ensemble cast with a lot of talent and each one portrayed a unique individual from the period.
Olivia never gave birth once on that show! There were a lot of characteristics of Livvy that I don't care for, but honestly, I'm just seeing them now, not back when it was on in my late HS and early college/adult years. When I first started watching again last winter, my main memories were of the family as a whole and not individual characters or how I related to them.

I certainly enjoyed her character arc it was very interesting to see her go from occasionally being too strict, to being much nicer as they got older. I really like her defending that woman in The Violated, it's one of the most powerful things in The Waltons, and, I may be entirely wrong, but, I have a feeling she may not have defended her as much as she'd been in Season 1 (and especially not in her Homecoming incarnation!)
