I don't think Richard ever considered his leaving a risk or gamble.... the main thing about him is that he prefers the stage, with movies coming in second.... Doing The Waltons served his purpose -- gave him experience and got him known.... his horizons expanded. Staying much longer would probably have caused him harm.

I agree with Jet. Richard is so at home on stage. Having seen him a number of times, I can assure you that his passion shines through his theatre performances. As much as maybe we would have enjoyed having him continue in the role, we must remember that he has been the most active "Waltons" cast member in show business after the series than anyone else. Of course, there are others who have nearly equalled him in their bodies of work, but I would have to see that he tops everyone.

McLean Stevenson also didn't do much after he left M*A*S*H. He had a few failed comedies but that was it. I forgot about Shelley Long who played Diane Chambers on Cheers. It was on the air from 1982 to 1993. She started on it in 1982 but left in 1987. But I personally love Cheers much better with Kirstie Alley (Rebecca Howe). So I was glad that Shelley left.
