I remember the clackers. I was so happy when my parents got them for me. They were so popular that all of my friends had them. We played with them at home and at school. In today's world you would not be able to take clackers to school. They would be considered a "weapon" & you would be suspended for having them.

My mom was a teenager growing up very poor on a farm during the Depression.... one thing the family had going for it was the fact that her father was quite a good "machinist" -- and, like Jim Bob, he put together cars from scrap!! And then sold them for extra money!! Amazing to me....

I like how they all pile carefree into the back of the truck. Health and safety would have a fit if they saw that these days Rupert, I never could figure out how they kept their balance when sitting on the edge of the pickup box. Been there, done that!

Ridden in the back of a pick up truck many times. That's how my little league baseball team used to get from game to game. We'd meet somewhere, pack into the back of the coach's pickup and ride off to take on the bad guys!
I think its artistic license that they were able to travel so much and always seemed to be able to raise money when they needed it. But I guess that resolve is one of the reasons we love them for many of us.

The Waltons also traveled quite a bit by bus. That could not have been cheap either. I loved that old beat up bus they always had. It looked worse than John's old truck.
They also hitchhiked occasionally. Guess it wasn't so dangerous back then! I have done it myself.
