One of mine happened in the "movies", not the series: Paul & Erin getting divorced!!!!!!!!!! My nameis Paul you know Kim, butI didn't like the way he acted a spoiled rich guy that broke Erin's heart, but Ashley Longworth didn't do too much better. WmFan Paul was a good man in the Spirit when he taught Jeffery about Chrstmas and he was from my hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin

For me, it was the way the composition of Mary Ellen's and Ben's families changed in the later movies...John Curtis gone, Clay added, Virginia dying, and no mention of Charlie. The inconsistency was very disappointing, despite the reasons that must have been behind it.

I have to say the biggest disappointment in the series was bring Curt back, as others have mentioned. Did any of the writers ever publicly say why they did this? Did they feel it would help with ratings?

Did they feel it would help with ratings? If you know anything about Pearl Harbor before and after the attack you would know it couldn't happen that way. Curt would never have been listed as killed unless they were absolutely sure he was dead he would have been listed as missing. All service members had to wear dog tags at all times. So Curt would have to have lost his tag and somehow it ended up on someone else that was killed. After the attack the only way curt would make it back to the mainland would be on a ship and no way he could have been able to do that without the Navy knowing who he was. If that did find out he wasn't killed they would have notified hie wife.

Tonyray, Sometime during the last year or so, a member had a great way of explaining it all away !! Can't remember who it was.... but I think it had to do with Curt's position and his ability to easily slip his tags on a corpse.... and the member also had a good explanation of how he got back to the mainland and Florida.... I hope whatever forum member it was will step forward again !!
Or, maybe someone can find that thread....
A lot of "info" about what went on during WWII is surprising. My dad enlisted into the Navy, never had to do boot camp or whatever the Navy calls it, had duty at a desk in the Armed Guards Center in Brooklyn in some accounting function, home every weekend and sometimes even at night. Finally was assigned to a destroyer in May 1945 -- the new one named after the Sullivan brothers. So, off to San Diego, but there was something wrong with the radar equipment, and Dad had liberty every weekend, did a lot of sightseeing up and down the coast, etc., never saw any action at all. That destroyer simply did a mail run between San Diego and San Francisco !! So, when the subject of the war came up, Dad was tremendously embarrassed !! His biggest problem was trying to get back to NY after he was discharged.... took about 20 days, almost missed Christmas !! I bet a lot of the servicemen have great stories about struggles to get back home, with everyone doing it at once -- there were only so many seats on buses and trains, and even standing room would fill up fast !!

My dad joined the Navy right after Pearl Harbor before he finished High School (He did tell me that the school had a graduation ceremony and all the boys that joined the military got their diploma before they left for boot camp) He went to great lakes Illinois for boot camp and then was sent to a POW camp in Douglas WY about 40 miles from Casper his home town. He told me he though he would be able to go home every weekend but was wrong he could only go to Casper if he has a 3 day pass because it was more then 30 miles from the post and they were really hard to get daring the war.

I know plenty about the attack on Pearl Harbor. I was asking if the writers of the show had explained why they decided to bring Curt back. I sat at the table with Tom Bower at the reunion in Ca. He had explained why they wrote him out of the cast. Not sure why they wrote his character back in 'years' later.

Peggi, I doubt if anyone knows why exactly.... In the past, some members have stated an assumption that Curt was brought back in an attempt to generate some further interest in the show.... it had gone down in the ratings quite a bit, cast members had left, and they were struggling to keep it going a while longer.
As with many threads, this one took a slant in a different yet related direction. Nothing wrong with that.... (also nothing wrong with your bringing up your original question again.)

Tom Bower was speaking to the whole crowd at the WIFC banquet. He said he had asked the CBS brass for a raise and the next thing he knew was Curt was sent to Pearl Harbor and never came back. At least Tom Bower never came back LOL

LOL at the Fan Club Dinner Tom said he asked for more money and got sent to Pearl Harbor. When they decided to bring Curt back he asked again for the higher amount and they hired the other guy LOL.
I agree that if they coudn't get Tom they should have scrapped the whole idea of bringing Curt back.
I know Richard was horribly busy but I think recasting John-Boy was a mistake. If Richard wasn't able to preshoot scenes to insert into episodes (why not?) they should have just left the character offscreen. JMO
Sending Amie off to boarding school seemed like a horrible waste of storyline potential.
I also hated the inconsistencies in the reunion movies. Awful.
