Margro We were in Australia this past March, and you are right - there is much to see. It's a long trip from Alabama, but well worth it!! Sydney Harbor is breathtaking anyway, so I can imagine how spectacular it was with fireworks etc. Happy New Year to a Waltons fan from the other side of the world.

On New Year's eve my husband took our 3 sons (ages 10, 8 & 4) to go buy some fireworks. When they got back, my 4 year old came running to me so excited saying, "Momma! Momma! Daddy bought some toys that explode!!" He was all worked up about it. We had him lay down right before 8:30 p.m. so he could get some sleep before we brought the New Year in at midnight. Normally, if you have to wake him up before it's time for him to get up, he is so groggy & whiny. At 11:30 p.m. all we had to say was, "Wake up, do you want to go outside & see the fireworks?" Boy, he popped right up, fully awake & raring to go! He was definitely bright-eyed & bushy-tailed. He said, "Momma, I have something important to tell you. We need to go outside & see the toys that explode." My hubby done the firework balls that shoot way up in the air & explode. I did the roman candles & all six of the kids did sparklers. May we all have as an exciting 2013 as my 4 year olds New Year "toys" was. ;D

I didn't know there were any states left where those types of fireworks were still legal for private use..... I think they've been banned for at least five decades up here.... I'd like to hear from other forum members about laws concerning fireworks in their areas. Thanks.

I'd like to hear from other forum members about laws concerning fireworks in their areas. Thanks. Here is the law in the state of Maryland. My comment is in red. What fireworks are legal in Maryland? The answer is not too many. Unless part of a public display (approved by the local fire department), most fireworks are illegal in Maryland. In these counties, there is an outright ban of all consumer fireworks. This doesn't stop my neighbors over on the next block from putting on a display every July 4th or stop some stores from selling them. Shows how well they enforce the law. Baltimore City Prince George's Montgomery However, sparklers containing no chlorates or perchlorates, and ground-based sparkling devices that are non-aerial and non-explosive are permitted in most of the rest of the state. Typically this includes “gold label” sparklers, “snap-n-pops,” “black snakes,” and “Champagne party poppers.” The sale of sparklers to persons under the age of 16 is illegal. These counties and municipalities ban ground-based sparklers: Harford County Howard County Ocean City Sparklers (both hand-held and ground-based that are legal according to Maryland state law) are allowed in Baltimore County. Possession and/or use of illegal fireworks in Maryland could mean confiscation and fines up to $250. I remember driving down l 95 to Florida and seeing firework stands and stores all through South Carolina.

I'd like to hear from other forum members about laws concerning fireworks in their areas. Thanks. Here in good old Alabama....fireworks are illegal in alot of the "cities" unless it is done by professionals for that city. Also there is a minor league baseball team about 30 miles from my house, that has a big fireworks display after their home game that is closest to the 4th of July. But in the country (where I live) fireworks are legal. There is a fireworks stand about 5 miles from my house. We always go there & buy our fireworks. The guy who sells them is an ex-boss of mine. He always "gives" us some free fireworks in addition to what we buy. He has a heart of gold & is a very nice man. There are people all around here who shoot off all kinds of fireworks. I love the firework balls that we shoot off every year at New Year's & 4th of July. They are just like the ones that you see at fireworks show. A big boom & then a big beautiful light show.

There are all kinds of strange laws regarding fireworks. On July 3, 1996, there was a horrific fire in a fireworks store in Scottown, Ohio, which is just across the river from where I live in West Virginia. Nine people were killed; several of them were children. At the time, it was legal to sell the fireworks in Ohio, but they couldn't be used in Ohio. They had to be taken out of state, which was convenient since it is on the state line of 2 other states, West Virginia and Kentucky. My local newspaper still has an online site about the fire. www.herald-dispatch.com/multimedia/galleries/historicalphotos/x2066790/Gallery-1996-Scottown-Ohio-fireworks-fire-kills-nineHere is a video about the fire: www.wsaz.com/wsazhistory/60moments/64730527.htmlI'm not sure what the laws are now, in Ohio or West Virginia, since fireworks have never appealed to me and I have never purchased them.

Seems to me that just about every summer there's a newstory or two about some kid getting his hand blown off. Like every other dangerous item, it's so very important that extreme care be taken.
I remember in the late forties, up on my grandparents' farm (upstate NY), they had brought some fire crackers up from a funeral trip to South Carolina, thinking it would be fun for us kids when we arrived for the summer.....
But, we were not allowed to touch them, merely watch my grandfather do different things with them -- like, putting one under a tin can which would fly high up into the air..... Even with precautions, my parents were NOT HAPPY!! I never experienced this again. I suspect there were some harsh words said after we kids had gone to bed !!

I grew up with fireworks. My Dad had his military trunk from when he was in the Army totally filled with all kinds of firecrackers, cherry bombs, etc....He taught my brother & I to be very careful with them. He also did the same thing with us about his rifles, handguns, etc....To always treat any gun as if it is loaded, to never, ever point it at anyone, etc....He would take us out in our backyard & we would target practice.
My husband & I do the same with our kids. You respect guns & fireworks. So far we have only let our kids handle sparklers when it comes to the fireworks (because we are all out there together at the same time). My husband would go out in our yard with our now 23 year daughter & target practice with her. I believe it helped her when she went to boot camp to become a Marine at 18. She went to Iraq & back but she just got out of the military this past summer.
My husband has been working with our 16 year old daughter for a little while now. Last week he took our 10 year old & 8 year old sons out to start with them. When it comes to guns, it is always just my husband & one or two of the kids, the rest of us stay inside. As anything in life, it is up to you as a parent to teach your child responsibility, safety, etc...about things in life. Whether that is shooting a gun, walking across the street, stranger danger, using a knife, carrying scissors across the room, fireworks, etc....We believe in informing & preparing our kids the same as our parents did us.

Unfortunately, sometimes kids will be kids and ya just can't be watching every minute. It would scare me to death to have either guns or fire crackers in the house if kids were around..... however, it's not how my mom was brought up on the farm, and my grandparents handled their family about the same way you do yours......

Back in 1991 my best friend's brother and girlfriend were seriously injured by our town 4th of July fireworks and as a result the town did not have fireworks for 20 years. They are fun to view but very dangerous.
