Have no idea how many times I've watched The Marathon..... a zillion..... but yesterday, it suddenly bothered me that John-Boy had quit.... For the first time, I was annoyed that he had not kept going -- at least until he looked a lot the worse for wear than he did..... I wonder why the producer/writer went in that direction..... I guess time was running out !!!
What do you think?

I saw it yesterday too yet had a different opinion. I cried when he left the girl behind because she was so desperate, yet John told him" you don't have to stay..and neither does she". I took away John Boy knowing he had other options and had made the decision to walk away. It hurts when you make hard decisions..I liked the episode, other than Olivia whining. Lol.

For some reason, that was one of my less favorite episodes.

There was a financial reward to winning the dance marathon. Daisy wanted that money to get away from the life that she had. John-Boy, although poor, was rich in other ways such as family love and support. His motivation was not as strong as hers.
That being said, who knows what the writers really thought so many years ago!

I hate this episode. Hate, hate, hate, it.
The topic was stupid and our John Boy was too smart to take part in such a thing, John Boy was over 18 at the time and Olivia should have kept her meddling self at home. She was embarrassing and unneeded.

When I watched the Marathon last, I could have sworn Daisy said something about growing up in foster homes. Did I imagine it?

She was embarrassing and unneeded. Heh. Heh. Not one of my favorites, either, Marilyn and Scarlett.... and Livy was definitely at her worst !! Man, she could be difficult.... Don't know if I agree that "John Boy was too smart".... oh, he was smart enough, but I think his adventurous spirit and keen interest in all things around him would have spurred him on to attempt the marathon -- that and possibly an interest in Daisy ..... But, I guess I have too much confidence in him -- hard for me to believe he would quit like that..... caused me to lose some faith in my hero !! (temporarily)....

I didnt mind if he " quit", In my mind she was using him at that point.
They hooked up later, but at 1st, she was playing him.
I dont think he quit, he just got smart.
I think he realized , "Hey, I am killing myself for a girl I like, and she is just going to use the money I help her to win to go away and leave me ! "

Well..I believe as a young man twenty years ago..I get it. Foolish..yearning..and quite frankly..first time the John Boy character really had to deal with desperate people as an adult without mommy and daddy ..until he remembered he was not quite ready.

I still wonder if Daisy won the money. Maybe it got her to New York to start her dance studio where she met John Boy later in the Achievement wm sportwriter

No Daisy grew up in Lynchburg. She was raised properly but she probably became lonesome and fell for the first boy who came around who exploited her and got her pregnant without marrying her. Her mother wanted her to marry him but she would not marry someone who obviously did not really love her. She fled Lynchburg, heard about the marathon when she reached Scottsville and her money had run out. She may very well have won because it may have been what enabled her to go to New York and get a job at the dance studio.

Daisy worked at a dance studio? .... I thought it was one of those sort of raunchy dime-a-dance places (catering to "lonely" men)......

I guess I was using different terms. Yes it was a place for lonely men, but I guess a dance studio is more of a place where you would go to take dancing lessons. I guess the best term for the place Daisy worked was a dance place.

I wonder if there are any of those places left. Imagine dancing all night with strangers...for money. I don't think I'd like that too much!
