Probably mated her with a neighbor's bull. That's what they did in Spencer's Mountain anyway.

Yes, that is usually how it was done. You either carried your cow to your neighbor's bull or they brought the bull to the cow.

And then it was usually bartered for the fee. Like a cord of wood or something like that.

You usally brought the cow to the bull. And if the off spring is a bull calf it goes to the breeder (bull owner ) but if it's a heifer , the cow owner get's the calf. I grew up on a ranch and that's how it use to be. It was a barter system. The Bull owner get's the bull calf as a future breeding source. Or they are butchered at age 1 when the meat is tender , but the calf is "Banded " ( Cut another word's ) The Meat from a bull is to sperm tasting.
