Carol,
I don't think this will keep the spammers out. In the past, they still had to register in order to post their spam. I try to take care of it as quickly as I can, and then I disable the account and ban the person, but there are probably millions of spammers out there.

I just want to say it doesnt worry me at all logging in. before i just went straight in now I sign, honest i dont mind anyone knowing I'm here. as for the last bit about spammers, there will always be the ones who try to spoil it for the rest of us. best thing is to ignore them.

Somehow I missed the spammer last week. How can that be ??!!
I had always figured the "guests" were people like me, who didn't bother logging in unless they wanted to post on a particular thread.
It doesn't bother me at all, either. Now, I just stay logged in all the time -- which, somehow, I figured was not a good thing to do on a pc.... re viruses, etc. But, then, we all know my way of figuring !!!

I've never heard of getting a virus from staying logged in on a site like this. The site just puts a cookie on your browser that remembers your log in information. If you go to another computer, you will have to log in again. The only time it might be a problem is if you are using a public computer. Then the next person who uses that computer will be logged in to your sites. This is especially a problem if you do online banking or use paypal, etc, and you forget to log out. Those sites usually have enough security, however, that you are logged off automatically as soon as you leave the site.

It is 99% safer to remain logged in to a site, or have the password stored for the site, than to log in and out of terminals, wireless, or not. Remaining logged in reduces the level of attack, even on worn-out Windows! You could always use a better browser, or use Linux, or Mac instead. I would be happy to assist with any technical aspects that need closer inspection. mercantile

I have been told by the shop I use to fix my pc when necessary that -- because I use a dial-up connection -- it is not good to stay logged into anything, that it leaves me more vulnerable to viruses.....
Seems to me that seldom does anyone agree on computer stuff..... my younger sister is quite good at it, and I have a close friend who is very knowledgeable, too -- but they never agree on anything !!!
Woe.

Woe. Aha. You might want to explore other connections available for a few dollars a month. Dial-ups are almost unheard of these days. Security is going to be an issue, I'm afraid. What you are spending on fixes could be better spent on a more modern copper/ wireless option. mercantile

Thanks, but nah..... this old fogey is okay with it most of the time. If I didn't hate my cable system so much, I might make the change. Frankly, I mostly use my pc for word processing.....

I assumed that there was something wrong with the site so I didn't bother logging in. I thought there'd be a notice from the administrator if there was a change but I didn't see one and when I went looking to find a thread about this I kept getting hung up on the ProBoard advertising for free boards. The 'stay logged in' feature raises a bit of a red flag for me - I've been told by tech people to never check that if I want to preserve password protection and privacy.
I don't understand why being a guest is a problem - believe it or not, there are a lot of shy 'net' people who need to be guests for awhile before they feel comfortable jumping in and some never do. It's your board, but I for one am sorry you've decided to go this way.
