I think people just really liked them because they were so sweet.
I think both were chronically a little tipsy on The Recipe.
I love them both, but Miss Emily is my favorite.
grtgzu, they were based on real-life people, but it was a mother and daughter rather than sisters. This is true, like this post

Do you have a favorite Baldwin sister? I adore both ladies but Miss Emily touches my heart in a way that Miss Mamie doesn't. Maybe it's her Innocent naive nature or her life long desire for Ashley mixed with her sweet, funny disposition. Mary Jackson was a gifted actress as was Helen Kleeb. Love both ladies "don't ya know" ;D I love them both but I'd have to go with Miss Emily too. Her innocent naive nature hooked me from the very beginning. Just a wonderful character. I often wonder how it would have been if she would have married Ashley. The Baldwin sisters are an endearing part of the Walton's.... ZnE

I love them both equally. I actually think they play off of each other so well, it's hard to think that either one of them would have been nearly as entertaining with out the other.

Yes it would have been really sad if one of the Baldwin sisters had lost the other one. They were inseperable. waltonsportwriter

Out of the two sisters, I would have to say Miss Emily. I think it is because personality-wise I am just like Miss Mamie in real life.
