Oh yeah, You guys remember when John Sr said something to olivia like: "Why dont we go out and make love under the stars like we did when we were kids ?" When was this?! Thank you for resurrecting this thread, johnboyswife. I don't remember seeing it before. John did say that to Olivia once, but I can't remember which episode. I think it was a time when he was feeling like his life was boring and he wanted some adventure, so he took a job somewhere else. It could have been when he got that job with the highway department and worked in that office where the boss was mean to everyone, or it could have been when he went to Norfolk or somewhere and stayed at that boarding house run by Mrs. Champion (I think that was her name). He said it to Olivia before he left to get the new job. Anyway, as for John Boy losing his virginity, I think it's possible that it happened with any number of girls/women. He had so many girlfriends, it's hard to know when it happened, and the writers left us guessing. In the book Spencer's Mountain, Clay Boy lost his virginity up on the mountain with that prissy girl Claris. The writers also left us pretty much guessing about the others, but it's possible that one or more of the other children also lost their virginity before marriage. I know Olivia thought of the possibility. Remember when John called her and told her that Ben had gotten married, and she asked if they had to? Curt's sister was trashy, and Jason fell for her big time. I think that could suggest something happened there. I'm not sure about Mary Ellen. She and David Spencer were making out in the car once. It could have happened. G.W. wanted to, but Erin "wasn't that kind of girl", at least she wasn't in the episode where she went to visit him at the Army base. By the time Ashley Longworth Jr came along, I think she could have been that kind of girl. Drew Cutler wanted to, but Elizabeth apparently wasn't that kind of girl either. As for John and Olivia, I always thought they were just kids when they got married, so he could have been referring to early in their marriage. I think the writers very wisely left all of this up to the viewers' imaginations. We'll never know for sure about any of them. I just thought of something. In the episode where Drew wanted Elizabeth to spend the night with him, Elizabeth went to Erin for advice. It seems like I remember Erin telling her that one time she and Ashley almost went too far, but after Ashley broke up with her, she was glad it hadn't happened. Daisy Garner had a past before she met John Boy. Olivia and the rest of the family didn't seem to be too critical of her though. Olivia told her that she didn't like it that she had lied to John Boy, but she accepted her and Melissa into their home and even took up for her when Cora Beth called Melissa a "love child" and wouldn't let her play with Aimee. I have a hard time remembering titles of episodes, and I often get one episode mixed up with another one, so sorry it that's what I've done here.

I don't think awesome is getting the quote right ... John was about five years older than Liv, so I doubt he considered himself a "kid" when they were first courting, although she was !! ... On the other hand, at the age when John said something like this, he may have considered himself a kid at 20 or 21.....
And, does making love necessarily mean having sex

Sure Brenda! I often stalk the forum and this post really stuck out to me. Actually, I find it surprising how many people think Jason lost his virginity to Curt's annoying sister. Just because she went into a hotel with that sleazy music producer guy, doesn't mean he..."enjoyed her company", as my grandpa used to say I mean if I had a boyfriend and I saw him walking into a hotel with another woman, I would be hurt to, whether we had intercourse or not. In fact, I don't think he even lost it to Toni before they married. In one of the episodes (maybe the one after The Last Ten Days? The episode when they hear the war in Japan is over) Jason says something like, "I can't marry a girl until I've properly courted her", kind of reminding me of the old church-going, proper Baptist Jason, which in turn made me think they hadn't done it yet. On a completely irrelevant note, I hate how they made Toni fat and whiny in one of the reunion episodes! Jason had just come back from a music tour or something and Toni (now having borne three kids I believe, wearing a housedress and an apron) nags him about his career. After that, Jase replies with something along the lines of, "The longer I'm away from you, the more I miss you." I couldn't even stand to watch more after that because I was so disgusted with this "new" Toni.

That could have been a reference to them being so young when they married. Have you read Spencer's Mountain? Clay Boy goes up on the mountain with a girl to check on the house and comes back with a suntanned backside. He puts Noxema on his tush and his father tells him to find a shady spot next time!

I agree. Remember in It's a Wonderful Life, Mary tells her mother that George is making violent love to her. I think that just meant that they were kissing.

Yeah, I think it's right. It is one of the "John is restless with his life" episodes like Brenda said. He might not have said "when we were kids" though.

hmmm.... strange, I think, in these days of growing world-wide obesity, that we continue to denigrate overweight, frequently depressed people, regardless of the underlying reasons.... how can we make this a happier world again?

I think "making love" could have more meanings than just sex. In older books I have read it can mean they are talking about a courtship, kissing, or making out I guess.

I couldn't even stand to watch more after that because I was so disgusted with this "new" Toni. I'm no expert on the reunion shows, as I don't watch them much. But perhaps she was intended to be pregnant? Or perhaps the real Toni had gained weight? In the show she was to have had several kids by then so it would be unlikely for her to have retained her "model" like figure (although many women do a great job of getting back to their pre-preggers birth weight).

Toni was all set to divorce him..till he sold a Song to Elvis.
And The Col. probably ripped him off too.
He only bought songs if the song writer would sell the publishing rights to the songs.
For instance, Dolly parton's "I will always love you" was gonna be a Elvis song, but She wouldn't sell the rights.
Dolly made a lot of money when Whitney did that song - just from Publishing

Sent from my Huawei Y301A1 using Tapatalk John cussed out a preacher. You think he wouldn't have pre marital sex ? Then again that is probably why he cussed out the preacher. lol He wanted married quick so Olivia would give it up. Heck, they might have done it out doors in the back of a truck since they eloped. that's funny lol

Yeah, I think it's right. It is one of the "John is restless with his life" episodes like Brenda said. He might not have said "when we were kids" though. Here's the exact quotation from "The Departure" Season 3. "Let's go make love under the stars like we used to when we were kids." awesomemixtape10 pretty much had the quote right.

I thought it was pretty close, but I haven't seen that one for awhile. At the time I wrote it, I had probably seen it recently.

I think it's definitely a case of "making love" having different meanings. If I recall correctly, my grandmother used to refer to "making love," even though it was just kissing and holding hands. It's still an interesting choice of words, though, considering the show was made primarily in the 70's.

I agree. Remember in It's a Wonderful Life, Mary tells her mother that George is making violent love to her. I think that just meant that they were kissing.
I remember the first time I ever watched It's a Wonderful Life (years ago) and I heard that said in the movie about making love. I couldn't believe that they had that in a 1946 movie!! But then a few years later I matured some and realized that making love back then meant something different than what it means to my generation.
Some recent examples: In the late seventies and early eighties you went "steady". Now the kids say, "We're going out". I think that's funny because a lot of them are pretty young and not going out anywhere together (no movie, restaurant, bowling, etc.) they are just a couple at school, so why say we're going out? Then back in my day you would say, "My mistake", "I was mistaken", "I didn't mean to do that", etc. Now they say, "My bad".
We all know gay meant something totally different years ago than what it means today.
The old definition: 1. joyous and lively, merry 2. bright, brilliant
I had a friend who was a few years older than me. Her name was Gay and she was mercifully picked on about her name in high school because of the new meaning of gay. (We did not attend the same high school).
