In the later episodes/tv movies, certain characters simply disappear, like Mary Ellen's oldest son, John Curtis, and then her second husband, Jonesey, is no where to be found or mentioned. Erin spposedly divorced and had a bunch of kids, but where are they? And she never dates again? And what happned to Cindy?

These are questions that not even the actors themselves can answer. Eric Scott mentioned in a post today that the writers said people would forget. I don't think they realized 40 years later there would be a forum, and a bunch of people discussing the details of the show. I'm sure if they knew about us, we would have those answers.

Don't forget Ben's son Charlie wasn't mentioned either.
So let's figure this out...
John-Curtis learned that Curt was still alive, blamed Mary Ellen for keeping it from him, and went to live near him in Florida. Mary Ellen went on about her life and didn't mention him because it was too painful (nor did anybody else). Don't worry, they made up later.
Jonesy was on a fellowship overseas and just didn't get mentioned.
Cindy and Charlie were off on an extended visit to her mother, who was ill.
Erin did have a passel of kids, but there were too many to focus on so much, so they just ran around in the background. I like to think that somewhere down the road, she and Chad wound up together.

They should add your name to the writing credits dewlanna! They could have had story lines for these characters, I mean, they were kind of important characters.

Aww, thanks daniela. My imagination knows no bounds.
I agree! Seems like I read somewhere that budget was a consideration but how about we trim off all the unidentified children that Erin and Mary Ellen had and have someone we actually care about around - John-Curtis, Cindy, Jonesy...or at least mention them! I imagine it was pretty darn frustrating for the cast.

The writers back in the 1970s were not counting on multiple episodes shown daily on 3 different cable networks, the entire series plus the reunion episodes being available on DVD, and the Internet to connect viewers from around the world. Even so, I have a hard time believing die-hard fans like us would just forget characters. Those writers definitely underestimated our enthusiasm for the show.

Remember in the reunion movie when John Curtis saw a ghost or spirit in the trees and it turned out to be Grandpa. So touching. Best wishes wmfan

Jonsey was mentioned in A Waltons Thanksgiving Renioun. I'm not sure where he was at. Weird that Cindy, John Curtis and Charlie disappeared and Mary Ellen had a girl and a boy after being told she couldn't have anymore children due to her accident in Mother's Day On Walton's Mountain.

Strange that Rose went to work for Paul after his divorce from Erin. They never had children in A Day Of Thanks on Waltons Mountain, but in A Waltons Thanksgiving Renioun, she had 3 kids.

I think Jonsey was supposed to have been in Vietnam. Mary Ellen and Jim Bob had a conversation after Jim Bob took ME's son for a plane ride and Mary Ellen said she was worried that he wasn't going to come home either like Curt.

There were different scriptwriters for the reunion specials. They had not seen the prior episodes. Paul and Erin did not divorce in real life they are still very happily married and probably have a lot more than 3 kids now. Charlie was probably studying for high school finals at the time of the 1963 Thanksgiving reunion so he was not available. When the 1970(1969) reunion came along he was either in graduate school or married and living out of town. The specualation about Curt after they brought him back borders on the ludicrous. Saying that John Curtis chose to live with Curt in Florida makes no sense. JohnCurtis probably married and moved away---that is the easiest explanation.

I am just watching the 'Walton's Thanksgiving Reunion' right now. It has only just begun and the anomalies are very clear - two extra children of Mary-Ellen's...I assume she and Jonesy eventually adopted. Or could Jonesy have had a son/brief marriage while he and Mary-Ellen were apart after the Curt-reappears episode...? that would explain it for me. But with regards to Cindy and Ben - she is grieving for Virginia yet the absence of Charlie really stands out. I know this has been discussed before many times but it does throw you - maybe this family arrangement and circumstance was closer to real life for Earl Hamner in that period of time....?

Cindy is in 'A Walton's Thanksgiving Reunion'...I'm watching it now as I type. Cindy does not appear in the final two - A Walton Wedding and a Walton Easter. That was a strange decision for the scriptwriters to make....no children and no wife for Ben. I find it unusual that given the popularity of this show and the characters that the writers sacrificed continuity for storyline....

What about characters who Earl Hamner referred to in his closing narratives along the lines of 'we never saw or heard from **** again...'....just watched The Literary Man yesterday and sure enough in the closing narrative Hamner says 'we never saw or heard from AJ Covington again...' but in fact AJ turned up in the later episode featuring the abdication....can anyone else recall another character reappearing after Hamner said they never heard from them again...?
