From reading his books, I think Earl is a rather lusty man. As they say, "Still water runs deep." Must be that Italian blood! Well...John-Boy DID have a lot of girlfriends! So perhaps that part WAS autobiographical. And he did get married later in life so he must have had plenty of girlfriends! I am reading Fifty Roads to Town is a really deep, rather dark book. It is set in Virginia but it's definitely not the Walton family! I wonder where he got the ideas for the characters in the book? It is very well written with some interesting, colorful characters. Wife cheats on husband, hits him on the head with a bottle which makes him simple minded, then she sleeps with the traveling preacher, who is caught looking through the daughter's window as she is dressing. Definitely not the Waltons!

It sounds like a soap opera.

for eloping with John? I cant believe that they didnt write at least one episode about her family. They had an aunt in the Menopause episode and and a Uncle or something in a first season episode and that was it. It would make sense.. I wish they did have more extended family in the series. Especially the Mountain Waltons and Olivia's family.

Spencer's Mountain and The Homecoming. Thank you Brenda I wonder, if my library has a copy of these books. Or I can find it at a used book store.

Gosh I must be the only person who did not enjoy reading Spencer's Mountain I just could not warm to any of the characters. Clay-boy came across to me as deeply resentful of most of the aspects in his life. Certainly I'd have been very unhappy as a woman living in that community as Hamner depicted it.

Your comment about Clay-boy being resentful makes me think of John-boy's whining I sometimes wonder if it's because Richard Thomas so dominated the character with his own winsome personality and physical qualities that the viewer paid less attention to some of the less likeable traits of John-boy i.e. the aforementioned whining or the bossiness and that whole first-born son thing they had going. The Homecoming was much closer to the book in its characterizations, but it was the Christmas story and the wonderful child actors that saved the film from the dustbin of history.

[/quote] Bucky, I posted ( I thought) this great post related to this one, but my computer went the Hades.........Anyhow in case the post never shows up........I totally appreciated Patricia Neal's versions of Livvy. It was real and honest. It was more like a woman from that area and era. Patricia seemed to play Olivia as a woman of faith, who knew how to keep her family fed during the lean times of the depression. The actress in Spencer's Mountain did not seem as stressed as the Olivia of The Homecoming. Richard did a stellar job in The Homecoming. That was the movie that made me love The Walton's in the first place.

Michelle Duggar...Liv Walton...same thing? o that it didn't seem like she really had no life before she met and married John and became a mother to all those children. -She NEVER DID have a life. She was only what, 16 when they eloped? she never developed into anything but wife and mother like most women of that era.

I may have missed it but Olivia also mentioned about having one of her brothers give her away when she and John talked about renewing their vows. Also somewhere in the series it was brought to light that her parents were dead. In all of this I would like to believe that she did have contact with her family but given the times they were spread out more and she never saw them on a regular basis.

I reckon ye could be right Becky Lee. I do believe her folks had passed as well. I wonder if her brother giving her away thing was a writers error because John and Olivia ran away to get married. Of course, they would have had to have had witnesses. Also, Wasn't there an episode where Olivia tried in her old wedding gown? Another writer's error? As they ran away and probably did not have time for a wedding gown. Just my thoughts....
