I don't see any indication of politics in that article, just lots of facts and fantastic pictures that show it like it was. Thanks Janice!

Janice, Please know that I was not AT ALL pointing a finger at YOU. I apologize for this misunderstanding. I felt this article had an agenda of pointing out the ugliness of the era and, by inference, placing some unfair "blame" on Americans. I could be wrong. I have long had "issues" with The Daily Mail... and they do in fact have a reputation for being somewhat anti-American. I remember one article where they went on and on about our not entering WWII until after we ourselves were attacked -- without mentioning our Neutrality Act, nor the fact that we supplied armaments and even had our ships escort British ships back and forth across the Atlantic for a couple of years prior to our entering the war formally -- we were doing as much as we could at the time. After Pearl Harber, we were able to nullify the Neutrality Act -- which then permitted our declaration of war. Hence, my "sensitivity" to anything published in The Daily Mail. I wish you or Marilyn had simply asked what I meant.... and I wish I had explained it when I first posted..... don't know why I didn't.... probably in the middle of something else or in a hurry. Again, SORRY .... it goes without saying that we all appreciate your sending along anything you think might be of interest.

Jeri, I didn't ask what you meant because I figured you meant what you typed. That was an ugly era in our history and we did bring the dust bowl upon ourselves by ripping out all the trees in order to plow all the land and plant more crops. Greed had a part in it. After this event, the gov't paid men to plant shelter belts all over the country in order to prevent another dust bowl, plus the gov't pays farmers to leave some land just sit and not be worked. My dad was unemployed at that time, very young, and was hired by the gov't to plant trees!!

Well, I did mean what I said -- but it was not directed at Janice. I continue to think that The Daily Mail had an "agenda" (at least to some extent) regarding that article.
It's interesting how people with different backgrounds, growing up in different geographical locations, have different responses when thinking about something like the Great Depresssion. Coming from the northeast, with my father's side of the family in banking, I immediately think of the Stock Market Crash -- the Dust Bowl situation is not the first part of it all to come to my mind....

We are farm people and never bought a stock in our lives, so yes, the Dust Bowl would be more familiar to us than the stock market crash. Not a banker in sight on my family tree.

We are farm people and never bought a stock in our lives, so yes, the Dust Bowl would be more familiar to us than the stock market crash. Not a banker in sight on my family tree. My father's family never had the money to buy any stock..... being in banking doesn't mean having money, nor does it mean necessarily having anything to do with Wall Street. My grandfather supported his family as a Teller supervisor in a savings bank..... My mother's side were the farmers in our family.....

A rather politically-slanted article..... world politics, that is...... Hi JeriJet Just think a little before you send your messages, it sounds as though you are rushing into answering and getting the wrong end of the stick when no harm was meant.
I am on this forum as like others I have an interest in the Waltons, no interest in politics, that is all. I will not put up with any nonsense in the future from you or anyone else, this is the second time you have attacked my posts.
I accept your apology, lets just get on together and have an easy life? if I say something out of place you can drop me a note.
Chill out, and enjoy!
Kindest Regards Janice

Every newspaper has it's own 'agenda' - everyone of them, even the small town papers here in ND have a slant one way or the other - big deal, as an adult we have to chose what we believe or not believe. I loved the photos and Thanks for sharing them with us janice10. BTW, for lovers of old photography or historic photos, there is a great site that I check out when I have the time: www.shorpy.com/
