here is her reply
Mary McDonough It's crazy, I think they just didn't want to bring inb MORE people for the shoot.

I think what bothered most was the fact that he wasn't even mentioned John Curtis would have been like 24 years old in 1963 so all they would have to do is say he was at collage and couldn't make it home for thanksgivings or something like that. As for ben's son Charlie he would have been around 16 a little harder to explain why he wasn't there.

Mary Ellen got married in the spring or summer of 1937, If we do not admit this fact, how do we explain The Abdication episode which we know took place between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 1936where she was still very much a maiden??? With this fact established John Boy went to New York to get his book published in the early fall of 1937 and Mary Ellen gave birth to John Curtis in the early spring of 1938. This means that in the fall of 1963 John Curtis had already graduated from college and was living out of town---he may even have gotten married but there was no room to include that in the story. It is correct to say that Ben and Cindy's son Charlie who was born in May of 1947 would be in high school in 1963 but he may have been occuepied with term papers at the time. The fact they were not included can be ezplained away by another reason--budgetary limitations and if they had included them all it would have been a 3 hour special rather than just two hours!!!

It would have made more sense to set it in 1953 instead of '63

They wouldn't have had to add any extra time onto the movie in order to have John Curtis there.

I think that television writers generally are on completely different wavelengths from the average fan.

Also, throughout the series,John and Olivia had said they were married in 1915 or 1916, but in "A Walton Easter",which took place in 1969 or 1970, it was their 40th wedding anniversary, meaning they did not marry until 1929 or 1930. In "A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion", Ben and Cindy's daughter Virginia was written out as having died. Jonesy was in Vietnam. There also could have been an explanation of John Curtis and Charlie's whereabouts, they did not necessarily have to be shown. As was stated in another post, budgetary constraints often win out over continuity.
