Years ago on the Dinah Shore Show, Dinah sang the Waltons Theme Song. Something about "Take me back now, to the hills of Virginia" but thats all i rmember. It was so beautiful!! did she write the words? I would love to have the song. She sang it so hauntingly, it was absolutely breathtaking. Anyone know if its out there anywhere??? Thanks! Becci

I remember the episode as well--I believe it was initially telecast on February 25,1976.I believe all of the children are mentioned in the song. Perhaps you can look it up on the Dinah Shore archives.

Yup, I said I didn't find the words, but that neat site with some fun Walton's stuff on it.

I thought it was neat when I realized that the same composer who did the Walton theme did the one for Star Trek as well.

Nice one Marilyn, loved the link, I agree with his comment there should be more shows like The Waltons rather than The Osbournes!! Always nice to come across a new site which mentions The Waltons.

I remember the song, I believe Merie Earle sang it in Season 1, Episode 14 "The Minstrel" (on The Waltons) If you listen closely on most episodes of the Waltons, it is played in the background.

Thanks! Enjoyed the site. Oh I enjoyed the site, too! I came upon this paragraph when reading about the story behind the show:
The show climbed steadily up the ratings chart, reaching #1 by the end of the first season, eventually knocking The Flip Wilson Show and The Mod Squad off the air. In fact, the only places in America where The Waltons wasn't popular were in New York City and Los Angeles, because people there apparently couldn't relate to the show's rural, family-based themes. Somehow that doesn't surprise me and, to some extent, explains why I don't live in New York City or Los Angeles.
Ugh...one more reason I have to dislike NYC!!! Imagine...not loving The Waltons!!!. ppppfffftttttt!

Becci I found a link to view several Dinah Shore shows, but this particular one was not among them. It was from Season 2, Episode 110 and aired on February 23, 1976. Dinah's guests are "The Waltons" cast, with creator Earl Hamner, Jr. and actors Richard Thomas, Michael Learned, Ralph Waite, Ellen Corby, Will Geer, Judy Norton, Jon Walmsley, Eric Scott, Mary Elizabeth McDonough, David Harper and Kami Cotler. Highlights: A musical salute to 1932 by Dinah. Ellen & Will sing "I Remember It Well." Jon & Ellen sing "Ironing Board Blues." (This is the song Jon Walmsley actually wrote and performed in the Season 1 episode "An Easter Story." dfnmeows44 posted that the full-length version of the song mentioned all of the children. I haven't been able to find it, but did find these lyrics to the first couple of verses: "Let me take you back now To the hills of Virginia Where the world was much simpler Than we find it today
We had problems for sure There were hard times upon us But in dear old Virginia Just how hard could they be?"

Here are the complete lyrics as sung by Dinah Shore on her show many years ago with Waltons cast members as her guests. I taped the song on a cassette player off the TV so I would have the words. I can't believe it has been so hard for people to find these, so I'm glad to share them with other Waltons fans!!!
Let me take you back now-----to the hills of Virginia, When the world was much simpler-----than we find it today. Through a field we will run-----And I'll show you a valley, Where the lazy old river-----winds slowly away.
And from a high top branch of a big maple tree, You just would'nt believe-----All the beauty you'll see.
We had problems for sure-----there were hard times upon us, But in dear old Virginia-----Just how hard could they be.
