I question why Mary Ellen was suddenly married.
I did notice that Judy was married in real life when Mary Ellen was married (was she maybe pregnant in real life and they were getting ready for it)?
Anybody know why Mary Ellen was suddenly married and then her husband gets the axe within a year or so?

Dear Tankeryanker. This sudden marriage did not occur in the way you described it. At the end of the fourth season, when The Collision episode was shown on March 4,1976, the announcer announced what would be fourthcoming the following season in the fall. He mentioned that Mary Ellen would be getting married and that Ben would have a brush with the law. The Wedding however did not occur until a two hour episode was shown on November 4,1976. Initially Mary Ellen was engaged to be married to David Spencer but then Curtis Willard appeared on the scene. It may have been that scriptwriters were caught in a predicament over David's last name. Could he have been a cousin to the Walton family??? Maybe they had to redu the script and bring in Curtis Willard because cousins cannot marry.I think I posted this supposition before but I will do it again. Since however Mary Ellen was already planning to get married shows there was no rush to judgment---only the fact that she did not know Curtis Willard very long when she married him would be considered a 'marry at haste we will repent at liesure.'Mary Ellen married Curt in 1937 and Curt was not shipped off to Pearl Harbor until the spring of 1941.This is hardly giving someone the axe within a year or two. It is just that the episodes moved faster in TV time than in Walton time!

I don't know, i preferred Curt, until the issue arose in season 9 in the whirlwind and tempest that he wasn't really dead. I can't say the story line in those was exactle one of there best.

I liked David Spencer alot and I know some prefer him to Curt.......but I really think that Curt's personality was a good match for feisty Mary Ellen. I thought they were great together. David was too easy for Mary Ellen to push around. Curt stood his ground with her. It was very sad that he was killed at Pearl Harbor (I do not acknowledge The Whirlwind other than it was a huge mistake) ...... but it was the verge of WWII and the truth is so many of our soldiers did not survive.
I look at Curt just like Grandma..........lots of spice and snap in them ;D

That's why I think she should have married the other guy and had a normal life, so to speak. The Whirlwind was too 'out there'... Truth be told, it bummed me out bigtime!

Here's an acceptable Walton Chronology--- corrected from an earlier post--- Mary Ellen married Curt in the fall of 1936. This enabled Johnboy to go to New Jersey to write about the Hindenberg in May of 1937. Hilary Von Kleist came to Virginia in the fall of 1937. as she went back to Vienna when the Anschluss occurred in March of 1938. John boy goes to New York in the spring of 1939 and when he gets home Mary Ellen is pregnant. John Curtis was born in October or November of 1939 as War had already been declared in Europe(CF The Hawk). The Battle of Drucilla's Pond took place in June of 1940 at the same time Paris fell.. John boy comes back home to Marry Daisy Garner in August 1940 but finds out she is already married. Zeb(grandpa)dies in the early spring of 1941/ Mary Ellen graduates from nursing school just after that and Curt is sent to Pearl Harbor.

What does Mary Ellen's marriage have to do with John Boy traveling somewhere for a story?

I believe that the truth was John Boy was going to marry Daisy but then discovered that she had had a child out of wedlock and never told him about it. It was something that he just could not get over - the fact that she had never told him until just before they were to be married. Then later, after John Boy/Richard Thomas left the show, Daisy came back with her daughter to give Olivia back the engagement ring that John Boy had given to him when they had been engaged. She then decided to stay and actually took over Mary Ellen's house for another episode or two.

She did not formally marry someone else but she had Melissa out of wedlock. Her mother detested the act and she fled Lynchburg. Then she went to Scottsville where she ran out of money and in order to get somme money she participated in the marathon at which time she met Johnboy.

I don't think John Boy didn't get over her having a baby out of wedlock. I think that Daisy needed to do this on her own, get to know her daughter, and make amends with her mother, and figure out where her life was going. In her mind it wasn't fair to John Boy to expect him to leave New York and his job just because she needed to. I think it broke his heart, but more because they weren't together, than because she had a baby out of wedlock.

This all happened before he left the country and she's the one that told him it was over. He was willing to accept the little girl.

After thinking through all of the episodes there wasnt any chronological order. Mary Ellen could not have married Curt until early 1937 because if she had there would have been no way to explain the scenes inThe Abdication which of course occurred in December 1936

All I know is that there are only six episodes in season 5 and then Mary Ellen is married. I say that is fast.
We see Curt off and on through out the rest of season 5, but he never has more importance than Ike.
By season 6, Curt is sent to the army and we really don't see that many scenes of he and Mary Ellen together.
It is almost as if the producers wanted Mary Ellen married and then changed their mind.
