The flames coming out of the windows was real fire. But it was done through gas pipes, etc. by professional pyrotechnics guys controlling it. Also the areas that were to not get burned were coated with a fire retardant of some kind so that the flames would not burn everything.

Ryan, was it you who had shared a URL with us that had talking notes from one of the producers or writers that talked about how the buildings and lots were filmed? It was excellent an I can't find it. The writer also had done work on MASH and cheers and star trek.

Steve,
It was REAL fire coming out of the dormers. What I mean by pyrotechnics (special effects using real fire) is that the flames were real but they were controlled (a controlled fire to only burn where they want it to burn.) Either they coated around those areas with a fire retardant so as not to burn the entire house facade, or they let part burn to film, stopped the cameras and put out the fire and then rebuilt those small sections. In any event, the fire was purposely rigged and monitored and controlled by professionals.
